Millennials are the loneliest generation, research says
As per a survey by British data analytics firm YouGov, millennials were found to be the loneliest generation when compared to Gen X and Baby Boomers. Surprise surprise.
The survey found that 30% of millennials always or often felt isolated, with what’s being called the ‘loneliness epidemic‘ reaching an all-time high.
The survey also found that 25% of millennials don’t have acquaintances, 22% don’t have a close group of friends, and 30% don’t have anyone at all to call their best friend.
The survey links social media as having a negative effect on one’s well-being, but that’s not the whole story.
A separate study on loneliness found that people feel the most alone in their lives during their mid-50s, late 80s, and, yup, late-20s.
Apparently, people who are in a ‘period of major decision-making‘, going through a midlife crisis, experiencing health issues or suffered loss due to old age are more prone to loneliness, proving that the feeling of isolation shouldn’t be solely blamed on social media.
Considering that we’re in an age where communicating with people is literally one click away, millennials being the loneliest generation is ironic. Maybe this shows that IRL connections are what truly matter and what we should prioritize a little bit more.
