Here are simple steps to know if your computer is infected with a virus or malware and whether you need to install a software to remove it.
Now is the best time to clean our computer so it runs smooth, fast, and free from any virus and malware as most people stay and work from home after the government imposed quarantine and lockdown measures to curb the massive spread of the deadly Coronavirus disease.
But first, you have to know whether or not you even need to do it. Here's how:
Download RKill. The developer, BleepingComputer.com, says it is "a program that attempts to terminate known malware processes so that your normal security software can then run and clean your computer of infections."
RKill is very light (1.76 KB) and works as a standalone program, meaning it doesn't need to be installed in your computer to run.
Once downloaded, right-click the file and run it as administrator. The program, as what the developer says, "will kill malware processes and then removes incorrect executable associations and fixes policies that stop us from using certain tools." We have proven that. In fact, certain processes in an infected computer were stopped which enabled us to clean the unit with an anti-virus/malware software.
When finished, RKill will display a log file in text format (Notepad) that shows the processes that were terminated. If nothing bad was found, just delete the log file, otherwise you will need to use another program to remove the detected virus or malware. We recommend turning on Windows Defender or downloading Malwarebytes.
