CIDG: Deaths of Ateneo Players Rene Baterbonia, Divine Adili ‘Not an Accident’

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police's Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has concluded that the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Aurora province were "not an accident," raising questions about possible negligence and accountability.

CIDG Director Major General Robert Alexander Morico II revealed that investigators found circumstances surrounding the June 8 tragedy that suggest due diligence may not have been exercised before the water-based activity took place. The incident occurred in Dipaculao, Aurora, where members of the Ateneo Blue Eagles participated in a team-building event.

According to CIDG findings, four players reportedly encountered difficulty in the water during the activity, with two surviving and Baterbonia and Adili tragically losing their lives. Investigators noted that sea conditions were dangerous and that participants were allegedly exposed to strong currents despite warnings regarding weather and water conditions.

Morico said the investigation is exploring possible criminal liabilities, including homicide or violations related to hazing laws, depending on evidence gathered from witnesses, coaching staff, and organizers of the activity. CIDG has been conducting interviews with players, coaches, and former team members to establish a complete timeline of events leading up to the drowning incident.

The CIDG has also sought the cooperation of Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin and other members of the coaching staff, including requests for additional evidence such as drone footage that may help reconstruct the events of that day. Authorities stressed that transparency and cooperation are crucial in determining responsibility and ensuring justice for the victims and their families.

The deaths of Baterbonia, 19, and Adili, 21, sent shockwaves through the Philippine basketball community. Ateneo de Manila University expressed its grief over the loss of two promising student-athletes and pledged support to their families, teammates, and coaches.

As investigations continue, calls for accountability and stricter safety measures during school-organized activities have intensified. The case has sparked a broader discussion on athlete welfare, risk management, and institutional responsibility in collegiate sports programs across the country.

The CIDG and the National Bureau of Investigation are expected to continue their parallel investigations in the coming weeks as families and supporters seek answers behind one of the most tragic incidents in recent Philippine collegiate sports history
