Habagat Rains Trigger Flooding and Landslides Across the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — August 11, 2026 — Heavy rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon, locally known as Habagat, continue to affect parts of the Philippines, causing flooding, landslides and dangerous travel conditions in several areas.

The weather disturbance has become one of the country's major developing stories as authorities respond to casualties and damage associated with the combined effects of Habagat and recent tropical cyclones.

19 Reported Dead

The Office of Civil Defense reported 19 deaths linked to the combined effects of Tropical Cyclones Luis and Maymay and the Southwest Monsoon. At least 15 people were also reported injured.

Benguet has been among the hardest-hit areas, with multiple fatalities reported in connection with landslides. In Baguio City, a landslide in Barangay Guisad Surong reportedly killed 10 people, while three others were rescued.

The incidents highlight the continuing danger posed by saturated soil and unstable slopes following days of persistent rainfall.

Flooding Hits Communities

Several communities have also experienced flooding as monsoon rains continue. Parts of Metro Manila and other areas of Luzon have reported flooded homes, businesses and roads.

PAGASA has continued issuing flood-related advisories and warning that moderate to heavy rainfall could trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in vulnerable and mountainous areas.

Residents living near rivers, waterways and steep slopes are being urged to remain alert and follow instructions from local disaster-response authorities.

Habagat Expected to Weaken

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the Southwest Monsoon is expected to gradually weaken. However, rain will continue to affect parts of Luzon, meaning the threat of flooding and landslides may not immediately disappear.

Authorities continue to monitor rainfall, river levels and areas considered vulnerable to landslides.

Local officials are reminding residents to prioritize safety, especially those living in flood-prone and landslide-prone communities.
