Matuto ng Tipid Tips Mula sa Ating National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal
June 19 marks the birthday of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. This year, the entire nation is celebrating the 158th birthday anniversary of our hero. In light of this special day, let us take a look closely at the life of Rizal.
In schools, Rizal is described as a patriot whose work of literature served as a catalyst for the revolution. Today, let's talk about the practical lessons we can learn from this national hero.
Rizal was born to a middle-class family from Calamba, Laguna. His family's wealth allowed Rizal to live comfortably and even pursue his studies abroad. Yet in spite of his wealthy roots, Rizal is far from being a spendthrift.
In fact, several historians and financial advisors claimed that our national hero is known for his frugality and wise financial decisions. In 1884, when Rizal was studying in Madrid, he maintained a detailed account of his daily expenses.
According to historian Ambeth Ocampo, Rizal listed every penny he spends, including his fees for food, lodging, and letter stamps. During that time, Rizal mostly spent his money on books and other research materials.
During his European journey in 1886, Rizal also prefers to stay in affordable accommodations. In one of his discovered journals, Rizal narrated how he switched from lodging to lodging, all while looking for more affordable rent and utilities.
In addition to that, our national hero also set an example in settling debts. To print his first novel 'Noli Me Tangere,' Rizal borrowed money from his friend Maximo Viola. As soon as he received money from his brother Paciano, he paid off his debt right away.
'Noli Me Tangere' and his second novel, 'El Filibusterismo,' went on to become literary masterpieces, which is still studied today in many countries. Millions of people admire Rizal for his nationalism, but he also sets a great example in frugal living.
