The Occult Background of Chemistry: The Ouroboros Symbol

Some people would recognize the Ouroboros symbol, and frequently associate the symbol of alchemy or occult practices. But did you know that a German chemist named Friedrich August Kekule used the Ouroboros as an inspiration for his research of the molecular structure of benzene?


Kekule had a dream of a snake devouring its own tale, the next day he discovered astonishing parallels between his dream of the Ouroboros and the molecular structure of benzene.

Uses of Benzene

Benzene is widely used in the petrochemical industry because it uses an ingredient of gasoline. It is also used to manufacture adhesives and plastic bottles. However, benzene is a carcinogen, excessive exposure to this compound may lead to cancer.

The Strange Role of Number 6 In Benzene

Strangely, The chemical formula for benzene is C6H6. In the eyes of a New Ager, the number 6 and the hexagon might mean a lot. Pythagoreans consider number 6 as the perfection of all the parts … the form of forms, articulation of the universe and a doer of the soul, while Jews associate the number 6 as the abstract form of a hexagram.

Ouroboros In Alchemy

In alchemy, it represents the spirit of Mercury (the substance that permeates all matter) and symbolizes continuous renewal (a snake is often a symbol of resurrection, as it appears to be continually reborn as it sheds its skin.), the cycle of life and death, and harmony of opposites.

As a symbol of the eternal unity of all things, the cycle of birth and death from which the alchemist sought release and liberation. It unites opposites: the conscious and unconscious mind. Alchemically, the Ouroboros is also used as a purifying glyph.
