School sa India, Tumatanggap ng Plastic Bilang Tuition Fee
These days, sending a child to school equates to burning a hole in your pocket. Because of the skyrocketing prices nowadays, education is slowly becoming a luxury most people can't afford. This problem is prevalent not only in the Philippines but in the other side of the world as well.
In India, they devised a brilliant plan for this dilemma. Instead of paying money for their tuition fee, this school in India accepts plastic from the students! This eco-friendly solution is the idea of couple Mazin Muktar and Parmita Sarma who are both teachers.
The two met in 2013. After realizing their vision for the children, Mazin and Parmita decided to help the poor students in their area. In 2016, the opened a small school which offers free education in Akshar, Assam.
At first, their humble school received little attendance. Even though they offer free education, most parents prefer to send their child to work rather than to school. But soon enough, more and more people kept on coming after seeing the couple's dedication in teaching.
Parmita and Mazin observed the growing trash problem in the area. So they ask their students to bring plastic to school that will serve as their tuition fee. This clever plan hits two birds with one stone; the children can study without worrying about the expenses, and the environment is free from plastic.
In turn, Parmita and Mazin recycle the plastic brought by their students. They turn these junk into useful materials such as ornaments and lamp. Some plastics were sold to the junk shop to fund their small school.
This couple's story inspired many people on social media. Parmita and Mazin received admiration for their passion to teach children while saving the environment at the same time. We take our hats off to these heroes!
